BENTON CROSS COUNTRY ACTION
By Phil Knapper yourfranklincounty.com EDWARDSVILLE — Benton's girls finished 17th as a team, the boys 23rd, at the 31-team Metro East Lutheran cross country Invite on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Saturday. Benton was led by Kaitlyn Schutt and Jenna Johnston, who finished 24th and 25th, respectively. Schutt is coming off an injury-plagued season a year ago and finished the course in 21:58. Johnston, a talented junior, ran the course in 22:00. "They were victims to the injury bug last season so our hope for them is to bounce back and show they are two of the best runners in Southern Illinois," Benton coach Rod Shurtz said. "They may have been a little disappointed in their places and times compared to last year at this meet, but they are veterans and they will improve significantly with time. " Chelsea Tabor was 106th overall in 235:54, followed by Aubrey Newcomb (135, 27:21), and Bailey Wynn (163, 29:19). "Chelsea Tabor was out #3 runner on the team and finished 106gh," said Shurtz. "Aubrey Newcomb ran a very good race for her first high school meet and finished 135th. Bailey Wynn improved her time from last year, ran a pretty strong race, and placed 163rd." The boys team is in a rebuilding year after losing so much from a season ago. The team was led by Tyler Price's 47th place finish in 19:30. Other Ranger finishers were Daniel Krug (121, 21:37), Alex Jerrells (133, 21:56), Gavin Hartley (171, 23:00), Dailus Richardson (173, 23:03), Clayce Fletcher (196, 24:29) and Logan Page (201, 25:19). |
"With the loss of several seniors from last season, five of our top seven boys in today’s race are first-year cross country runners," said Shurtz. "Our guys were led by Tyler Price. Tyler improved his time from last year and ran a pretty solid race. Daniel Krug was our team’s second guy and also dropped some time from last year. Daniel has really improved his strength and that will be an asset to his running. Alex Jerrells ran in his first high school cross country meet and had a good outing. He will learn how to run this race and get better as the season progresses. Two freshmen, Gavin Hartley and Dailus Richardson, ran respectable races for their first cross country meet. These guys will improve with time. Clayce Fletcher and Logan Page rounded out the team scoring for the Rangers." In the Open Race, Brandtlee Brown was 34th in 23:18 and Nate Clements was 48th in 23:46 to put two runners in the Top 50. Taylor Yucus (65, 24:56) was 65th in 24:56, followed by Zac Thomason (98, 26:38) and Matthew Krug (101, 26:42) to round out the Ranger finishers. "We were pleased with the performances of some of our young kids in the Open race. Brandtlee Brown ran well and Nathan Clements did the same as he finished 48th. Taylor Yucus ran a very respectable time and Zac Thomason and Mathew Krug had good efforts. The Rangers compete on Monday at Pinckneyville. They will run at Lake Sallateeska, with the girls at 4:30 p.m. and the boys running at 5 p.m. The Rangers then travel to Murphysboro on Wednesday. |
