ROY F. PAYNE - BENTON
Roy Faughn Payne, 93 of Bunny Hop Road passed away at his rural Benton home. He was the husband of Betty Neal Payne of Benton and the father of Evelyn Browning of San Diego. The Paynes were married on April 27, 1941 in Cape Girardeau and recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. Payne was a lifelong farmer who saw agriculture evolve from horse-drawn implements to the modern equipment guided by Global Positioning Systems. He also won numerous awards in the cutting horse circuit including the Illinois Cutting Horse Association Reserve Champion in 1961, and the Illinois State Championship in 1962. His prize quarter horse, Straw Boss, Jr., also won the Chicago International Central States Cutting Grand Championship in 1959. A year earlier he showed the IQHA Reserve Champion Pleasure Horse, Roy’s Red Boy. In addition to showing horses and traveling the United States as a western horse show judge, he also owned and enjoyed training race horses. Payne was a Christian and a 55-year member of the Benton Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Illinois Quarter Horse Association and enjoyed many years as a member of the Shawnee Sams Camping Club. Payne is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Evelyn and husband Joe Browning; and one brother, Howard Lee Payne of Benton. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Kelly Robertson and wife, Lori of Benton; Chelsea Halbin of Mt. Vernon; and Samantha Glascock and husband Joe of Chandler, AZ. His step grandchildren include Jonathan Browning of Los Angeles, CA, Kimberly Browning of Denver, CO and Steven Joe Browning of Benton. His great-grandchildren include Morgan and Matthew Robertson; T.J., Cayce and Kylee Halbin; and Jack and Cormac Glascock. His step great-grandchildren include Todd, Trenton, Aspen and Stetson Browning. He had one great-great grandson, Treaven Halbin of Mt. Vernon. Payne was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Kate Payne of Benton, and his sister, Wilma Rice. Leffler-Poulson Funeral Home handled the arrangements. |
