August is National "Look Who's Reading" Month

In their never ending efforts to promote reading, local libraries from around the country are participating in 'Look Who's Reading", a campaign that promotes reading to the young and old. "Reading is not only fundamental, it's a necessity in this ever changing "social media" environment, says Alice Sims. Take a moment out of your busy day to travel the world through books.

August 30th is National Toasted Marshmallow Day

During eleven out of the twelve months of the year, we enjoy a wide range of holidays. When we get to August, there is a major shortage of big holidays to celebrate. Perhaps that is why many Europeans take the month of August off for vacation.
Perhaps it as just as well that there are no big holidays to compete with National Marshmallow Toasting Day. After all, how could any holiday compare with this day!?!
Enjoy today or tonight by a campfire or bonfire, toasting a big, soft, sticky and sweet marshmallow, or two, or three, or….. Summer would not be the same without a campfire and this great campfire treat.Summer is short. Summer is good. So enjoy it while it is still here. Toast a marshmallow and forget about everything else.

Howdy y’all, I’m the Bone Yard Chef.
I was born and raised in Southern Illinois and, as I grow older, I like to sit back drink a cold one and enjoy some real southern delicacies. All I really need to make a meal that everyone can enjoy is some spices and something to cook meat in. Put a grill or a deep-fryer in front of me and I can make things your mouth will be begging for. The meat I want to talk about today is fish. My family will actually stop fighting to eat fried fish (which to me means it’s a miracle food). I’ve cooked all kinds of fish like bass, catfish, and crappie. I've even let some boy talk me into frying a carp for him, but I won’t do that again. So why am I talking about fish? Because sometimes I forget that although my cooking is downright mouthwatering, some restaurants know how to prepare a mean fish as well. The other night I was having a dinner with my family up at La Fiesta Mexican restaurant right off E Main St. in Benton. So, as I sat and read the menu, I realized I have had about everything they offer. That is until I saw this little thing that said two filet of fish. Now I thought to myself why in tarnation is there fish on a Mexican menu, so I asked the waitress what kind of fish it was and how it was prepared. She told me it was seasoned baked tilapia. Now I’ve had tilapia before, but folks, let me tell you, it was almost as good as the fish I cook. It was so well seasoned and delicious that if you put a piece on top of your head your tongue would beat your brains out trying to get to it. I must say that if you are ever planning on going up there you need to try this dish, it will be well worth it. Just walk in, order you some fish and tell them that the Bone Yard Chef sent you. Until next time y’all, keep cookin'. You can email me at boneyardchef@gmail.com. Tell me what you'd like to hear about next. |
